Once the pound-for-pound best in the sport, Roy Jones Jr now watches from the sidelines as the likes of Terence Crawford and Saul ‘Canelo‘ Alvarez fly the flag.

‘Bud’ and Canelo are both four-weight world champions, though two divisions currently seperate them. That gap of 14 pounds between super-welter and super-middleweight hasn’t stopped the smaller man in Crawford chasing the match-up.

Canelo was dismissive of the bout in the past but seems to be coming round to the idea each time he is asked about it. Should it happen, many in boxing believe the gulf in weight is too much for even an elite operator like Crawford to overcome.

Does Jones agree? He told Mill City Boxing ‘he leans towards Canelo,’ but did make a case for the American to snatch the victory.

“I like Terence, but I’m going to lean towards ‘Canelo’ with his size early but if he lets Terence get into the fight Terence going to be a problem and if Terence can deal with the size, Terence will beat him.”

Asked specifically how he feels Crawford would deal with Canelo’s power, the former four-weight world champion from Florida said that was the million dollar question.

“That’s what I’m saying, we don’t know until we see Terence get hit, cause we haven’t seen him get hit with that power. That’s the deciding factor. If you can change Bud’s fight plan you got a chance of beating him, but if you can’t hurt him, you can’t change his fight plan, and you got problems.”

Canelo is currently weighing up his options for a May return to the ring, with IBF Super-middleweight champion William Scull reportedly in the running.
