Roy Jones Jr – who trained Chris Eubank Jr for a period – knows a thing or two about becoming world champion.

Jones was a four-weight world champion having reigned at middleweight, super middleweight, light heavyweight and heavyweight, and was also undisputed at 175lbs from 1999 to 2002.

He holds victories over fellow legends like Bernard Hopkins, James Toney and Felix Trinidad, and is widely regarded as one of the greatest boxers to ever lace up a pair of gloves.

After retiring from the sport, Jones looked to pass on some of his expertise as he began training fighters, with one of them being British star Eubank Jr.

The pair worked together for a number of years, but split in the aftermath of Eubank’s defeat to Liam Smith back in January 2023.

Without Jones in the corner, Eubank went on to gain revenge in the rematch against Smith, and has now turned his attention to a clash against long-term rival Conor Benn in April.

Eubank will hope that a victory there could lead to a future title shot, with world honours still something that eludes him after nearly 15 years as a professional.

Jones has now given his take on whether his former student is capable of becoming world champion, telling Covers that Eubank may no longer have the desire.

“Eubank could win a world title but I don’t know if he has the hunger to win one. When you become 34-years-old you start to think differently.

“He is more interested in the Conor Benn fight than a world title fight because there’s more money in it. That’s what people are interested in now–money, names and events. Forget about tough fights, it’s about money, names and events.”

For now, Chris Jr is focused on his bout with Benn in April, and Carl Froch is one of the big names that has shared his thoughts on the fight.
