Hall of Famer Roy Jones Jr has shared his thoughts on a potential clash between Jaron Ennis and Vergil Ortiz.
It has been reported by multiple sources in the last few weeks that the unbeaten American duo are set to lock horns during the early stages of next year, with an official announcement expected to be made in the coming weeks.
Former unified welterweight champion ‘Boots’ Ennis recently made his debut at super-welterweight with a destructive first round stoppage victory over Portugal’s Uisma Lima to capture the vacant WBA interim world title.
As for Ortiz, the 27-year-old from Dallas made the second successful defence of his WBC interim super-welterweight title on November 8, stopping countryman Erickson Lubin in the second round of their bout in Fort Worth, Texas.
In an interview with Fight Hype, Jones spoke fondly of both fighters as he claims the intriguing match-up between Ortiz and Ennis is a ’50-50 fight’.
“Tough fight to call man. Listen, this is why boxing is good. It’ a 50-50 fight. Now, I’m going to say it like this, Ortiz is peaking right now, he’s very hard to beat right now, he’s at his peak to me. Very strong guy, very durable guy.
“I think Ennis might have the edge in skill, but as we know, hard work kind of gives skill a hard time if skill ain’t got no heart in it. So we got to be sure that he has that, and that’s the only thing we haven’t seen out of Ennis yet.”
The exciting match-up between the unbeaten duo is still yet to be finalised, although it appears that both fighters are interested in sharing the ring with each other in what could be one of the best fights of 2026.
