Roy Jones Jr believes there is one man who could have beaten the great Floyd Mayweather, but the Brit in question was never given his chance.
Mayweather is one of the very few fighters to have retired from the sport with an unbeaten and unblemished record. He competed between 1996 and 2017 and won all 50 of his contests without touching the canvas.
He bested the likes of Manny Pacquiao, Shane Mosley, Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez, Marcos Maidana, Miguel Cotto and many more on his way to winning 15 major world championships spanning five weight classes from super featherweight to super welterweight.
However, speaking on Ring Champs with Ak & Barak, Jones made the revelation that he thinks Mayweather chose to duck the former 140lbs champion Amir Khan, who had long been pursuing a fight with ‘TBE.’
“Hey, in my opinion, the only person that really had a chance in his weight class back then was Amir Khan. He wouldn’t touch Amir Khan at that time. Amir had two good feet. He wouldn’t fight Amir Khan, Amir Khan had two good feet, I already know this.”
Khan was an exceptional amateur who won a silver medal at the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens and went on to become one of the youngest ever British world champions. He often pursued huge fights and arguably showed too much bravery later in his career by moving up through the weights to face the likes of Canelo, who brutally knocked him out, and Terence Crawford, who also won inside the distance.
Now aged 38, ‘King Khan’ eventually retired in 2022 after being stopped by his long-time rival Kell Brook, but has often spoken about making a return for someone like Pacquiao.
