Boxing legend Roy Jones Jr has weighed in on how Manny Pacquiao might fare against Gervonta Davis.
Rumours have began to circulate about a match-up between Pacquiao and ‘Tank’ taking place next, with both fighters said to be interested in facing each other should the opportunity arise.
Davis currently reigns as the WBA world lightweight champion, with his most recent defence coming against countryman Lamont Roach Jr back in March. The fight was declared a split draw with many viewers believing that ‘The Reaper’ had done enough to dethrone Davis of his title. News of rematch has gone quiet, with Roach’s team not holding out hope that it happens this year.
Speaking to The Ring Magazine, Jones was asked to sum up Pacquiao’s chances against a ‘murderer’s row’ of the likes of Devin Haney, Brian Norman Jr, Teofimo Lopez, Ryan Garcia and Gervonta Davis.
Jones said that the Filipino legend could capitalise on any who are currently ‘struggling with their identity’ in the sport – an accusation that has been levelled at ‘Tank’ by big names such as Tim Bradley.
“Put it like this, he not going through that ‘Murderers Row’ again, no, but he can pick and choose a few of them. A few of them he gonna give them all they want.
“Now some of them are gonna be the ones that are mature like they’re supposed to at their age and they still have the youth, they’re gonna beat him because he’s not that age no more, you understand me? But the ones that are struggling, with their identity and with where and who they are right now, he’ll beat most of them.”
Whilst it had been speculated that Pacquiao could face Barrios in a rematch next, the 46-year-old’s manager Sean Gibbons has played down talks of this fight happening, as he claims ‘PacMan’ would be more interested in facing either ‘Tank’ Davis or WBA world welterweight champion Rolando ‘Rolly’ Romero instead.
