Jaron Ennis wants to test himself against the very best in the sport. Right now, that’s Terence Crawford.
‘Bud’ became a four-division world champion this month in his debut at super-welterweight, beating Israil Madrimov over the distance. Although he has kissed goodbye to the welterweight division in which he was undisputed, new champion ‘Boots’ Ennis still wants to fight.
Whilst the Philly native is keen on collecting more belts at 147, he has not ruled out moving up in weight to face Crawford in the future. It is, skill-for-skill, one of the best fights to be made in the sport – both undefeated with 60 stoppages between them, fan-friendly styles and the ability to fight out of both the orthodox and southpaw stances.
Does the younger man have what it takes to dethrone Crawford? Roy Jones Jr told Mill City Boxing that he may well have, but that he backs Crawford because of his pedigree.
“With Terence and Jaron, Jaron is a helluva fighter, make no question about it. That’s almost a pick ’em, but because Terence has been pound-for-pound best for so long my pick will probably be Terence early for that reason. He deserves to still be there until somebody beats him. I can’t go against him. But Jaron is the guy who definitely has the power and the skill to make something happen if anybody can do it.”
Crawford is unlikely to take the fight at this stage in his career. In fact, it’s believed that he may turn down any fight offer unless is it another jump in weight to face unified super-middleweight champion Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez.
