Boxing icon Roy Jones Jr has weighed in on the imminent rematch between Gervonta Davis and Lamont Roach.
The highly-anticipated second encounter between WBA lightweight champion Davis and challenger Roach is pencilled in for Saturday August 16 at an unconfirmed venue in Las Vegas.
Their first bout, which took place in New York on March 1, ended in controversy after it was declared a split decision draw. Davis took a knee to the canvas during the ninth round, although referee Steve Willis failed to rule an official knockdown.
Jones Jr, who is often credited with being one of the sport’s greatest fighters, has had his say on the upcoming rematch between the lightweight stars and is adamant he knows who will prevail in August.
Speaking to Pro Boxing Fans, Jones gave plaudits to Roach who he claims will ‘shock the world’ once again, but admits that he believes Davis will make the required changes to ensure he dominates this time around.
“I think he [Roach] shocks the world again, but the only thing different this time is Tank will come with a different attitude, a different personality, different motivation, and I think Roach will do good again but I think Tank will be more dominant this time.”
An official announcement is expected to be made in the coming weeks for what is sure to be one of the biggest fights of 2025.
The fight was initially due to happen in June, but has been rescheduled to the middle of August, giving both fighters plenty of time to prepare for what could be the most important night of their respective careers.
