Anthony Joshua faces newly-elevated heavyweight world champion Daniel Dubois on September 21 at Wembley Stadium.
The fight – propped up by an impressive undercard – represents a chance for ‘AJ’ to become a three-time titlist in the division, but could be a changing of the guard for British heavyweight boxing if Dubois, 26, can pull off the upset.
Both are on a run of good form following losses to Oleksandr Usyk, with Joshua dispatching of Otto Wallin and Francis Ngannou in his last two whilst Dubois scored hard-fought stoppages against Jarrell Miller and Filip Hrgovic.
Speaking to TalkSPORT, multi-weight champion Roy Jones Jr backed ‘AJ’ to be ‘dominant’ if he prepares correctly.
“I think Joshua is gonna be the favourite because of his past,” Jones Jr told talkSPORT Drive when asked about that fight. He just had a great fight with Francis Ngannou, but Ngannou is not Daniel Dubois.
So it’s gonna be interesting for a few rounds, but if Joshua goes out and it’s the Joshua we wanna see, I think he’ll be dominant and be victorious. If he takes Dubois lightly though, it could be an upset.”
The title fight was made possible by Oleksandr Usyk vacating the IBF belt ahead of his rematch with Tyson Fury on December 21 in Riyadh. The winner of Joshua-Dubois will have a keen eye on that fight, particularly if it’s ‘AJ’, who may finally get the chance to face Fury if he can reverse the result against Usyk.
