Terence Crawford and Saul ‘Canelo‘ Alvarez appear to be edging close to a fight.
Despite the two weight-class difference between Crawford’s last fight and Canelo at super-middleweight, the American has been relentlessly calling for the fight to prove his greatness.
Although Canelo was initially dismissive, he has slowly come around to the idea and met with boxing powerbroker Turki Alalshikh last week to discuss it.
Should it happen, the narrative will focus on how Crawford handles another move up in weight, this time 14 pounds. Will his speed be affected or his power diminished?
Speaking on Say Cheese TV, Ryan Garcia – who is set to return to the ring this year following a doping suspension – made it clear that he thinks ‘Bud’ has no business in the ring with Canelo.
“No don’t do that [Crawford]. Terence Crawford is not like that. Terence Crawford is an overhyped bum. I’m sorry but somebody has got to say it, you’re an overhyped bum I’m look at the camera right now, you f**king suck bro.
Stop acting like you’re like that, stop stealing boxing’s money, wasting everybody’s money, you’re not entertaining, you’re boring as f**k. Come see me in the ring if you think I’m talking s**t, I can do it anytime bro.”
Following Crawford’s win over Israil Madrimov in his super-welterweight debut last August, Garcia made a specific prediction on social media:
“Canelo KOs this guy for fun.”
Many in the sport do agree with Garcia, at least on the general idea that the challenge will be too much for Crawford. The switch-hitter from Omaha thrives on that, though, and he also has his backers, including Hall of Fame fighter Tim Bradley who believes his countryman will ‘beat the brakes off’ Canelo.
