Jaron Ennis missed out on a shot at Terence Crawford at welterweight but has said he would be willing to move up to make it happen.
Crawford jumped to the super-welterweight ranks this year to become a four-division world champion. His final win at 147 pounds saw him beat Errol Spence Jr to become undisputed.
Ennis was elevated to full IBF World Champion when Crawford’s belts were scattered and has since made one successful defence. Despite looking to unify at welterweight, it has been made clear that he will move up if that can’t happen, joining ‘Bud’ at 154 and moving closer to the match-up many fans want to see.
During an appearance on the Say Cheese podcast, Ryan Garcia was asked how he sees the fight going. The super-lightweight star, who is currently serving a one-year doping ban, backed ‘Boots’.
“I like Boots. In my opinion I like Boots [to win that fight.] I don’t think Crawford could keep up with somebody that talented and young and fast. I don’t. I haven’t even seen him fight somebody talented, young and fast. Have you? Can you name one? I think Boots gets his ass. Not by a lot, but I think he beats him … I’d go with the youth.”
Ennis is out next against Karen Chukhadzhian – a man he beat just last year – as a mandatory defence of his world title. Crawford is still angling for a fight against Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez and remains cold on the ‘Boots’ bout.
