The fallout from the Gervonta Davis vs Lamont Roach Jr fight continues.
‘Tank’ was the heavy favourite going into the contest, however, Roach pushed the lightweight champion all the way to earn a draw on the scorecards.
The result was overshadowed by a controversial moment that occured in round 9. After a jab from Roach, Davis appeared to look at the referee an then took a knee. After rising to his feet the 29-year-old made his way to his corner to get his face wiped. For some reason the referee stopped his count and didn’t rule the knee as a knockdown.
Speaking after the fight Davis blamed the situation on grease in his eyes.
“I got my hair done two days ago and she put grease in it. It burned my eyes. Why are you booing like this is bulls**t. It’s real facts.
Hopefully we can run it back for sure. Let’s bring it back to New York and have the rematch for sure. I think I pulled it off with the last three rounds for sure. I was catching him with some clean shots.
I was breaking him down as the fight went on. I didn’t want to make mistakes so I kept it cautious. He is a great fighter and has the skills. It was a lesson.”
One man who was a keen observer was former Tank foe, Ryan Garcia. He has taken to social media saying he scored the fight to Roach and that the ‘no knockdown’ decision is the ‘wildest thing’ ever in boxing.
“Lamont won that. Not calling that knockdown is the most wild thing I ever seen in boxing, that type of stuff makes boxing look bad.”
It looks like the two will settle the controversy soon with an immediate rematch being called by both camps.
