Ryan Garcia is on the verge of making his long awaited return to the sport.
The 26-year-old from Los Angeles, California was served with a 1-year suspension from boxing when it was revealed that he had tested positive for the banned substance clomifene in tests that were taken prior to his showdown with Devin Haney last April.
Garcia dropped Haney several times before being declared the winner via majority decision when they clashed at the Barclays Center in New York on April 20 2024, although the fight was later ruled a no-contest, meaning that ‘The Dream’ would maintain his unbeaten record.
As ‘King Ry’ prepares to face Rolando ‘Rolly’ Romero at Times Square on May 2, the 26-year-old has named the one fighter he wants to face over anyone else.
In a round of quickfire questions with DAZN Boxing, Garcia was asked what his dream fight would be, as he claimed he would love to face one of his former rivals in a rematch – Gervonta Davis.
“I would want a rematch with [Gervonta] Tank Davis.”
Garcia and Davis fought two years ago in a non-title bout at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. Despite the best efforts of ‘King Ry’, Davis knocked the 26-year-old out with a body shot during the seventh round to hand him the first defeat of his career.
‘Tank’ was taken the 12-round distance in a defence of his WBA lightweight title against Lamont Roach Jr on March 1, with the fight being declared a split decision draw after an entertaining contest. Davis and Roach are expected to face each other in a rematch this summer, with an announcement set to be made in the coming weeks.
