Ryan Garcia tested positive for banned substance Ostarine from tests on the day before and the day of his fight with Devin Haney.

The 25-year-old has worried fans in the build-up to challenging for Haney’s WBC Super-Lightweight World Title in April, posting erratically on social media and pretending to neck a bottle of beer while he took to the scales. He then missed weight by 3 pounds and was therefore unable to compete for the belt.

Despite all of the above, Garcia dropped Haney three times to massively upset the odds and win via majority decision. His victory lap was short-lived, however, when news broke of the positive tests.

Garcia claimed corruption on social media before his team of lawyers said there was evidence to prove contamination of supplements was to blame for the failed Voluntary Anti-Doping Agency test.

It has now been reported by Dan Rafael that the New York State Athletic Commission has made a settlement agreement with Garcia’s team which will see him banned from the sport for one year. He will also forfeit his $1.1 million contracted purse – though likely earned much more – and be required to pay a fine of $10,000.

The fight is also set to officially be ruled a no-contest, removing the win from Garcia’s record and expunging Haney’s of any losses. Haney fights on as champion.

Ahead of the verdict, Garcia claimed he had retired from the sport.
