Abel Sanchez, former trainer of Gennady Golovkin, has weighed in on the historic clash between Terence Crawford and Canelo Alvarez.
‘Bud’ Crawford racked up arguably the best victory of his professional career over the Mexican star last weekend to capture the undisputed super-middleweight championship at the Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas.
The judges at ringside scored the bout 115-113, 115-113 and 116-112 all in favour of the unbeaten American, who became the first male fighter in the sport’s history to win an undisputed crown in three weight classes.
One man that has experience in being in the opposite corner to Canelo is Abel Sanchez, who coached former unified middleweight champion ‘GGG’ for two of his three showdowns with the Mexican icon.
Speaking to Fight Hype, top trainer Sanchez claimed Crawford had a fantastic gameplan against the Mexican icon, before admitting that he thought the scorecards were a lot ‘tighter’ than he felt they should have been.
“Crawford fought a great fight and Canelo was the best Canelo could be that night … He won and I thought the scores were a little tighter than they should have been, I thought Crawford had more rounds but props to both guys, it’s good for our sport.”
Many fans and analysts have already claimed that they believe ‘Bud’ is the greatest fighter of this generation following that monumental victory over Canelo, who has now suffered three defeats during his career and could be on the verge of hanging up his gloves.
Crawford is expected to continue with his boxing career and could potentially drop down to middleweight for his next outing, a division that he is yet to conquer.
