The fight between Chris Eubank Jr. and Conor Benn has already made the front pages after a stunt at the first press conference. Former Eubank foe Billy Joe Saunders has now weighed in.
Saunders knows what it’s like to be involved in pre-fight build up with Eubank well. The pair clashed in the ring back in 2015, with ‘BJS’ coming out with a points win for the British, Commonwealth and European middleweight. belts. There is still no love lost between the pair, with Saunders saying the Brighton man is the one man who would motivate him to return to the ring.
The bad blood is the same or worse between Eubank and Benn. They are generational rivals who were set to fight back in October 2023 before it was discovered Benn had tested positive for a banned substance.
After long battles to clear his name, Benn was given the okay to fight on home soil late last year and the two men are soon to get it on once more. Eubank has already caused controversy by breaking an egg on Benn’s face in reference to the WBC suggesting that his failed tests may have been a result of a ‘highly-elevated consumption of eggs.’
Speaking to BoxNation, Saunders gave his view on the stunt, calling it ‘a clown’s game’ before backing Benn for the win.
“Look, I mean, boxing is a clown’s game. Fighters they’re on that stage, is Conor Benn really bothered about an egg up his face? Not really. His eye’s perfect, he’s perfect, he’s in unbelievably good spirit for this fight, he’s very confident and I believe he can do the job. I think the fans are in for a good fight.”
