Billy Joe Saunders hasn’t fought since he shared the ring with Saul ‘Canelo‘ Alvarez in May 2021.

That fight saw Saunders come off a long lay off and although he boxed well in the early rounds, he was eventually stopped with a savage uppercut in the eighth round.

That punch broke his orbital bone and the loss meant ‘Canelo’ added the WBO super middleweight title to his WBA, WBC and Ring Magazine belts.

In the years before that fight, Saunders beat the likes of Andy Lee to first become world champion, defended against the then highly rated David Lemieux and also beat Brits Martin Murray and long-time rival Chris Eubank Jr who he narrowly outpointed back in 2015.

Despite often talking of a comeback, Saunders has remained retired but recently revealed to talkSPORT Boxing that plenty of talks have taken place.

They centred around a rematch with Eubank Jr and involved huge amounts of money, though Saunders said no as he felt he would not have been fully prepared.

“I had an interesting conversation with Chris Eubank Jr’s team not long ago. They offered me a heck of a lot of money to go in and fight in December. It was in the millions, but I said no.

“Why was I going to get in the ring and lose the weight and jump straight in and potentially get beat just for money? Especially with Eubank, I want a fair crack of the whip and with training and fights to get back in to go and win that fight.”

Eubank has since moved on and faces another equally bitter rival in Conor Benn on April 26 at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.
