Malik Scott has been speaking about possible opponents for Deontay Wilder.
The American former WBC champion is looking to build momentum and head towards another world title fight, having made an overdue return against the little known Tyrell Herndon in June.
That resulted in a knockout win for the once fearsome puncher who had at one point stopped every single man he faced, but then came up against Tyson Fury and lost two of their three fights by stoppage.
The Herndon win came more than a year since Wilder’s last fight, which was a devastating KO loss to Zhilei Zhang last June following his points loss to Joseph Parker.
Wilder had a new training team for the clash with Herndon, having spent the last few years of his career working with Scott, after the pair had fought themselves back in 2014.
Speaking to ESNEWS, Scott suggested he would be keen to see ‘The Bronze Bomber’ take on former champion Andy Ruiz Jr.
“I would love to see the fight. Hopefully it can happen. Deontay always wanted it. But Andy out-priced himself and once you out-price yourself, that’s the modern way of saying you don’t want a fight. But it’s a classic fight. Modern day big puncher against Andy, we all know what he comes with, he can punch. Winner gets Usyk, absolutely.”
Ruiz was a late stand-in opponent for Anthony Joshua back in 2019 and shocked the world when he won by KO. Six months later, however, he lost a points decision to surrender the unified titles.
Since then, he has fought just three times, beating Chris Arreola, Luiz Ortiz and drawing with Jarrell Miller last time out. After recovering from hand surgery, he is now back in action and ready to return.
