Terence Crawford looks set to step up two divisions to challenge Mexican great, Saul ‘Canelo‘ Alvarez.
Both are four-weight world champions, though Canelo’s title wins have extended all the way up to light-heavyweight whilst Crawford has only fought as high as super-welter.
Should the fight be signed – something Riyadh Season’s Turki Alalshikh is doing all he can to make happen – it will take place at super-middleweight, standard practice for Canelo, who has dominated there for some years, but entirely new ground for Crawford.
Three-weight world champion Shakur Stevenson knows Crawford’s level better than many, having been a close training partner and friend to him.
Speaking to Boxing News on the chances of handing Canelo his third loss in 66 fights, Stevenson said ‘if anyone can it’s Crawford,’ though he didn’t let his friendship with ‘Bud’ cloud his judgement, admitting it’s a tall task.
“I think it’s very difficult. Canelo’s got the IQ, he’s got the size, he’s got the power, maybe. It’s a very difficult fight, but I think if anybody can get it done it’s Terence Crawford.”
Fans patiently wait for news regarding the match-up, which seemed so far off just twelve months ago but suddenly feels just around the corner.
Alalshikh has shared a photo with each man in the past few days and ESPN Deportes’ Julius Julianis reported that there is a deal on the table for a September main event.
