Shakur Stevenson, Gervonta Davis and Devin Haney are all part of an elite group of young American fighters around the same weight classes that fans want to see mix it up.
Both men benefitted when Devin Haney moved up a division, vacating his undisputed status at lightweight to immediately snatch the WBC Super-Lightweight belt from Regis Prograis. Stevenson won the vacant 135 version of that belt against Edwin De Los Santos and Davis was upgraded from WBA Regular Champion to the sanctioning body’s sole champion in the division.
Although Haney won’t be moving back down to 130 ‘Tank’ Davis has ventured up to 140 once before, so the match-up still has potential.
Asked what would happen if his two rivals did face off, Stevenson – who has sparred rounds with both men – told Mics without doubt that the big-punching Baltimore native would get the victory.
“Tank. Tank by knockout. He’s gonna knock his ass out. He gonna sleep him. He’s been hurt by Linares.”
In his last outing Haney was dropped three times by Ryan Garcia, although Garcia was overweight on the scales and later tested positive for a banned substance. ‘Tank’ made relatively easy work of the same man last year, albeit at a 136lb catch weight with a 10lb rehydration clause.
Haney, with the loss to Garcia overturned to a No Contest, is currently the WBC 140 Champion in Recess. He is in talks to face IBF Champion Liam Paro later in the year.
‘Tank’ is slated to return this November with no further details yet announced and Stevenson will face Joe Cordina on October 12.
