Shakur Stevenson has mapped out his future plans as he targets a showdown with a reigning world champion.
The 28-year-old from Newark, New Jersey 23-fights into his professional career, having won world titles in three weight classes up until this point.
He currently reigns as the WBC world lightweight champion, with the next defence of his crown set to take place against Mexico’s William Zepeda on Saturday July 12 at the Louis Armstrong Stadium in New York City.
As he prepares for what could be the most important few years of his tenure, Stevenson has set his sights on a bout against one fighter in particular, as he prepares to potentially make the move up to super-lightweight to allow this fight to happen.
In an interview with Fight Hub TV, Stevenson admitted that whilst he is comfortable fighting at the lightweight limit, he could be tempted in making the jump up to face reigning WBO super-lightweight champion Teofimo Lopez in the near future.
“I’m a little guy so I’m chilling at 135 but I would love to fight Teo. I think Teo talks a lot of s–t and he think’s he’s that good so I would love to get in the ring with Teo.”
Lopez returned to the ring on May 2 as he made the third successful defence of his WBO crown against mandatory challenger Arnold Barboza Jr at Times Square in New York City.
Whilst his return to the ring is yet to be confirmed, there have been a number of potential opponents mentioned for the 27-year-old. There had been reports that Lopez had been in discussions for a showdown with Devin Haney before negotiations fell through last month.
