Shakur Stevenson has called to face both Gervonta Davis and Vasiliy Lomachenko. Fans would like to see fights between all three lightweight champions.
‘Tank’ Davis currently holds the WBA belt and defended it with an emphatic knockout of Frank Martin back in June. A month earlier, Lomachenko had won the vacant IBF title.
The pair quickly entered talks for a unification, but the Ukrainian pulled out due to ‘a lack of motivation’ to fight again in 2024. Despite that, his team has confirmed it does not mean retirement.
In an interview with DAZN Boxing, Shakur discussed the match-up and said Lomachenko had seen better days but he wasn’t to be counted out by any means.
“Lomachenko’s still Lomachenko. He is past his prime but he’s still a high-level fighter. He’s still elite. When I watched him against Kambosos I’m like this dude still [got it].”
He favours Davis in the fight, but wouldn’t be surprised if the Ukrainian had his hand raised.
“Yeah, I do [think Tank beats him]. But I think he could pose some problems or issues to Tank that we ain’t never seen before. No, I wouldn’t [be shocked if he beats Tank]. But that’s why I’m disappointed in the way he’s moving, because with his skill level you supposed to be ‘anybody can get it, what up?’ He ain’t moving like that.”
Stevenson, fresh off the back of inking a new promotional deal with Eddie Hearn’s Matchroom, has set out a three-fight plan – Joe Cordina on October 12, number one contender William Zepeda next and then ‘Tank.’
Whether the big puncher from Baltimore can secure a Lomachenko fight in that time remains to be seen. He is expected to return this November with an opponent as yet unnamed.
