Shakur Stevenson Names The Only Way The Gervonta Davis Fight Doesn’t Happen

Gervonta Davis and Shakur Stevenson are two halves of one of the best match-ups in boxing. Like many of those, it continues to evade fans.

The lightweight champions – Stevenson the WBC and Davis the WBA – are undefeated and in their primes. With Stevenson now a free agent, there should be no promotional barriers to overcome, and yet the fight isn’t made.

Should it become so, the intrigue lies in how Stevenson’s elite movement and defence stacks up against the stalking and calculated approach of ‘Tank’, who has knocked out all but two of his opponents.

In an interview clip from All The Smoke Fight, Stevenson said the fight has to happen.

“It’s kind of bigger than boxing I guess you could say cause of the history and everything that went on. It’s hard to even speak on it just because of the face that we gotta to fight … I know it’s gonna happen. I’m the best, he’s the best. You’ve got two guys that are the best, how can you not fight? … I’m ready for it, he ready for it, we’re both in our primes. It can happen next. It can happen next year. Whenever he say let’s fight, that’s it.”

He does, however, feel that both men must keep their undefeated records while it continues to marinate.

“Only way you can not fight is if one of the guys ain’t like that and goes off to lose, take an L. But I think we’re both really good fighters and on that level.”

In a post on social media, he said there was no fear involved in making the bout – an accusation often levied at fighters.

As for his would-be opponent, despite the rivalry, he recognises his talent.

“He’s strategic. He’s setting guys up. He’s been boxing since he was a little kid just like I’ve been boxing since I was a little kid. You can tell with the experience.

Stevenson is looking at a fight with number one contender William Zepeda next time out, whilst ‘Tank’ remains without a dance partner after talk of a rematch with Isaac Cruz lost steam when the Mexican was defeated this month.
