Unbeaten lightweight sensation Shakur Stevenson made his return to the ring on Saturday night.
The 28-year-old from Newark, New Jersey defeated the previously unbeaten pressure fighter William Zepeda at the Louis Armstrong Stadium on Saturday July 12, successfully defending his WBC lightweight title in the process.
Stevenson picked up a wide unanimous decision victory over the Mexican, who had been unbeaten in 33 contests prior to his showdown with the American star.
As he now looks to move on to a potential unification showdown next, Stevenson has shared his thoughts on the punching power of his Zepeda, who has stopped 27 of the 33 opponents he has faced during his career.
Speaking in the post-fight press conference, Stevenson paid homage to his rival’s ‘thump’ after being caught with over 200 shots – the most of any opponent he has faced. Post-fight, he admitted it was ‘too much punishment’ for his liking and may revert back to more movement in the future.
“He got a little thump, he got 27 knockouts man, we at the highest level of boxing right now so he got a little thump, he got like thudding power, it ain’t like one punch kill you power, it’s like thudding when he punch you over and over and over you can feel it so he’s tough.”
Stevenson extended his undefeated professional record to 24-0 with what many have described as a career best win over Zepeda. The 28-year-old remains hopeful that he can secure that monumental showdown with Gervonta Davis soon, despite his countryman’s recent arrest and planned fight with Lamont Roach Jr.
