Gervonta Davis looks set for a rematch against Lamont Roach Jr following their controversial draw. Shakur Stevenson has weighed in on whether or not his championship rival can get a convincing win this time around.
Roach entered the ring a heavy underdog against big-punching WBA Lightweight World Champion ‘Tank’ Davis, but flipped the script over twelve close rounds.
Whilst the three scorecards after the final bell made it a majority draw, most in the sport feel that Roach should have left the ring the new champion given Davis took a knee in the ninth round that was not called a knockdown by Steve Willis. Had it been, and the other rounds were scored the same, the challenger would have scored a unanimous points win.
Both men have confirmed that they will run it back and reports suggest a date towards the end of June. Ahead of that, WBC champ and hopeful future ‘Tank’ rival Stevenson has made his prediction. Speaking to KO Artist Sports, he said he was backing Roach to get the win the second time around.
“I like Lamont in the rematch.
“I sparred with Lamont and I knew that he was a good fighter. He helped me get ready for the Oscar Valdez fight, and I knew his style with Tank’s style what he was going to be able to bring to the table.
“They’re both good fighters, and it’s going to be a hell of a fight, truthfully they both good fighters. It was the same Tank we’ve seen throughout his entire career, he’s the same fighter and he’ll be the same throughout his career.”
Should ‘Tank’ manage to get the win the second time around, fans will once again apply pressure to see the Stevenson unifcation.
