Shakur Stevenson Announces He Wants To Move Up In Weight To Face World Champion Next

Shakur Stevenson wants to move up in weight to face a reigning world champion next.

The 28-year-old from Newark, New Jersey currently reigns as the WBC world lightweight champion, remaining unbeaten as a professional in 24 outings.

Stevenson has also won world titles at featherweight and super-featherweight since his debut back in 2017, defeating the likes of Oscar Valdez, Jamel Herring and William Zepeda along the way.

He made the most recent defence of his WBC crown against Zepeda earlier this month, defeating the previously unbeaten Mexican via unanimous decision at the Louis Armstrong Stadium in New York City on July 12.

As he plans his next move, Stevenson appears to be targeting a potential showdown with reigning WBO super-lightweight champion and fellow countryman Teofimo Lopez.

Speaking on social media, Stevenson claimed that ‘nothing’ is stopping a clash between himself and Lopez happening next, as he welcomes a move up to 140lbs from lightweight.

“I seen you say you want to fight me Teofimo Lopez, so what’s stopping it from happening next and this ain’t no bluff. Let’s make boxing great again Lil Teo.”

Lopez made his return to the ring in May, defeating mandatory challenger Arnold Barboza Jr at Times Square in New York City to successfully defend his WBO world title for the third time.

The 27-year-old from Brooklyn could make one final ring appearance before the end of the year, although official news on a fight date and opponent is yet to drop. Lopez is on a run of six consecutive victories after suffering the first defeat of his career to George Kambosos Jr 4-years-ago.
