Despite Saul ‘Canelo‘ Alvarez showing little interest in a fight with David Benavidez, there’s no doubt that it is one of the best match-ups in the sport of boxing.
Benavidez has long been looking for his shot at the unified super-middleweight champion but recently grew tired of waiting and moved up to light-heavyweight. He is still hopeful that the fight happens in the future, particularly if he can pick up world titles in this new division.
If it does, the boxing world is largely split on the outcome. One man who is backing Benavidez to dethrone long-reigning Canelo is a former opponent of the Mexican, Shane Mosley.
Mosley lost via unanimous decision back in 2012 in an attempt to win Canelo’s WBC Super-Welterweight World Title. He would retire five fights later.
Speaking to Fight Hub TV, ‘Sugar’ Shane revealed why he was giving the edge to the 27-year-old.
“Oh I definitely give the edge to David Benavidez for this fight. I’m giving the edge to David but I’m not counting Canelo out because I know that he does have speed and power, and David could get full of himself and something could happen. I’m thinking David wins. I’ve been a David Benavidez fan every since I saw him working at the gym a long time ago. I thought, this guy right here, he’s a monster.
“I give him the edge because he’s so much bigger and longer. I think it’s gonna be hard for Canelo to get his counters and stuff off. He’s gonna make Canelo fight at a pace that he can’t fight at. Canelo’s just a fighter that moves around intimidating, throws counters here and there and gets out. He knows how to manoeuvre the rounds, whereas David’s gonna make you fight every second of every round.”
Benavidez has agreed to fight David Morrell in a great light-heavyweight clash slated for January. Canelo is expected to return in May of 2025 with an opponent as yet unannounced.
