Canelo Alvarez has never lost a fight in the super-middleweight division.
The Mexican legend has a record of 62 wins, 2 defeats and 2 draws, and is widely regarded as one of the best pound-for-pound fighters on the planet.
At 168lbs he has beaten fighters such as Gennady Golovkin, Caleb Plant, Callum Smith, Billy Joe Saunders, Jaime Munguia and most recently Edgar Berlanga in September.
The two times he has come unstuck were against Floyd Mayweather at super-welterweight in 2013, and then up at light-heavyweight against Dmitry Bivol in 2022.
At super-middleweight nobody has yet to come close to defeating Canelo, but former world heavyweight champion Shannon Briggs has told ‘AB Boxing News’ the only man who he believes could ‘dethrone’ him.
“Benavidez.”
David Benavidez is undefeated at 29-0 with 24 of those wins by knockout, and has long chased a clash against his countryman Canelo.
He was previously the WBC super-middleweight champion before losing the title on the scales due to missing weight, and has since stepped up to light-heavyweight.
He defeated Oleksandr Gvozdyk in his 175lb debut to win the WBC interim light-heavyweight title, and is now set to meet undefeated David Morrell in January.
Benavidez has made it clear that he would be willing to drop back down to 168lbs for a battle with Canelo, but the reigning unified super-middleweight champion has previously stated that he would want a mammoth purse of around 150 to 200 million dollars.
Instead, Canelo announced his intention to try and avenge his defeat to Bivol in his next fight, but after Bivol lost to Artur Beterbiev in October, those plans may have been scuppered, and Canelo has revealed if he would face Beterbiev instead.
