Two-time welterweight champion Shawn Porter has shared his verdict on the controversial match-up between Gervonta Davis and Jake Paul.
Davis made his most recent ring appearance against Lamont Roach Jr in New York back in March, fighting to a close majority decision draw. All roads seemed to lead to a rematch, particularly as Davis took a knee in the ninth round which should have affected the final scores, but he has instead opted to make mega money with Paul.
The 28-year-old YouTuber-turned-fighter from Cleveland, Ohio returned to the ring back in June when he defeated Mexico’s former WBC middleweight champion Julio Cesar Chavez Jr in their cruiserweight clash in Anaheim, California.
Speaking on The PorterWay Podcast before the fight was official, Porter said that he fully backs the much smaller man to win by stoppage.
“I’m betting on Tank [by knockout]. You’d be surprised.”
There have been concerns raised about ‘Tank’ stepping up to face Paul later this year, especially considering the 30-year-old from Baltimore stands eight inches shorter and typically weighs in 65 pounds lighter. These worries, however, are likely to be addressed in the form of exhibition-style rules.
The promotion – Paul’s MVP – says that the fight will be a ‘hybrid’ contest, but are yet to decide on things like weight limits for each man, glove size and number of rounds.
