Two-time world welterweight champion Shawn Porter has revealed the three biggest punchers that he crossed paths with during his career.
Porter had an impressive professional campaign, suffering just four defeats in 36 bouts whilst reigning as the world welterweight champion on two separate occasions.
The Ohio-native held the IBF welterweight belt between 2013 and 2014, followed by the WBC strap which he held between 2018 and 2019. His career came to an end at the end of 2021, shorlty after he was beaten by countryman Terence Crawford.
Porter did enjoy a number of good victories during his tenure however, defeating the likes of Yordenis Ugas, Danny Garcia and Paulie Malignaggi to name just a few.
In a round of ‘Best I Faced’ with The Ring Magazine, ‘Showtime’ didn’t hesitate to reveal the three heaviest punchers that he ever shared the ring with, describing each of the trio as ‘thumpers’.
“I like to call them thumpers, fighters that punch hard. The three that really thumped me, Danny Garcia, Errol Spence Jr. and Terence Crawford. I can’t put them in order but the two fighters who put me down Errol Spence and Terence Crawford. It has to be Crawford because he stopped me.”
Crawford, Spence and Garcia all had considerable success during their respective campaigns at 147lbs, winning a version of the world welterweight title on at least one occasion each. Whilst Porter beat Garcia in 2018 via unanimous decision, he lost a split to Spence one year later.
‘Bud’ Crawford and Spence locked horns back in July of 2023, contesting the first undisputed welterweight championship of the ‘four belt era’, a bout that Crawford won via 9th round stoppage, dominating his countryman at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. He remains at the very top of the sport, whilst Spence has been inactive since and Danny Garcia returns this Saturday against Daniel Gonzalez in Brooklyn, looking to bounce back from a loss to Erislandy Lara last time out.
