Shawn Porter retired after a loss to Terence Crawford and has now weighed in on the pound-for-pound star’s fight against Canelo Alvarez.
Crawford last fought at super welterweight but will jump uo two divisions to challenge Canelo for his undisputed super middleweight world title.
The fight, when first mentioned, seemed unrealistic, with Canelo showing little interest and claiming he would get no credit for beating the smaller man. His opinion has changed since signing a deal with Riyadh Season, and the bout was officially announced last month.
Speaking to the Ring Magazine, Porter – who was fighting well against Crawford in 2021 before a tenth round stoppage loss – said that even despite the weight advantage for Canelo, it is a pick ’em fight.
“Terence is taller than him, has the reach. I’m telling you, that’s a 50/50 fight.”
Crawford will have taken confidence from Canelo’s last outing against William Scull, where the Cuban, though he lost on the cards, stayed out of harm’s way for the duration of the contest, leading many to believe that the Mexican has lost a step when it comes to cutting off the ring.
Still, Canelo is undefeated in the super-middleweight ranks and there is no arguing that if and when he lands on ‘Bud’ Crawford, the American won’t have taken a shot like that under the lights in the entirety of his pro campaign.
The pair face off on September 13 at the Allegiant Stadium, Las Vegas.
