Two-time welterweight champion Shawn Porter has previewed the impending rematch between Gervonta Davis and Lamont Roach.
The lightweight duo fought to a split decision draw in their clash on March 1, with Roach putting on a career-best performance against the reigning WBA lightweight champion.
The main talking point of the fight has been centered around the ninth round, following ‘Tank’ Davis’ decision to take a knee which was sensationally not ruled a knockdown by referee Steve Willis.
Roach landed a jab on Davis just before he took the knee, with many left pondering if this action should have actually been ruled an official knockdown, which would have had a significant impact on the scorecards, leading to Roach being declared the winner had the rest of the fight played out as it did.
Speaking on The PorterWay Podcast, former welterweight star Porter shared his thoughts on the rematch between ‘Tank’ and Roach, which is expected to take place in the summer.
“I think Tank might try to start off earlier and probably even force things, and it might work against him, you know. Like I said, he should have started this fight and put the heat on this kid and not allow this kid to get comfortable.
“You can see that he got comfortable. He was able to wear the punches much better later on in the fight when Tank really started to kinda unload and gauge some return as well. [People said he buzzed Tank], relax.”
Although an official announcement is yet to happen, reports suggest that the second fight could be set to happen in either May or June, with justice in Roach’s sights as he bids to finally become a two-weight world champion and hand Davis the first loss of his accomplished career.
