There was speculation that had Gervonta Davis won his last fight he was set to face Jake Paul.
Neither man has commented on the rumour, however ‘Tank’ Davis did notably avoid a question about the YouTuber-turned-fighter being his next opponent after saying no to other names thrown at him.
Paul’s name is as big as ever in the sport of boxing following a eight round fight with former undisputed heavyweight champion Mike Tyson. The 58-year-old was largely uncompetitive in what was an underwhelming main event, but the card itself and its broadcast on Netflix broke numerous viewership records.
Any plans that were there for Davis to face the much heavier Paul have been put on ice due to the nature of how he kept hold of his WBA Lightweight World Title – a controversial draw against underdog Lamont Roach Jr in which the champion took a knee in the ninth round that wasn’t scored as a knockdown.
Speaking on his The Porter Way Podcast, ‘Showtime’ Shawn Porter said he has no interest in the spectacle fight.
“I don’t want to see the Paul fight. It is an event. It doesn’t make sense.”
However, he did go on to make a prediction, backing ‘Tank’ to add a 29th knockout to his record despite being the considerably smaller man, currently competing at 135 pounds when Paul is comfortably 200.
“I’m betting on Tank [by knockout]. You’d be surprised.”
Paul’s next move is as yet unknown, but he will be looking to announce something big soon to follow up on the attention from his Tyson unanimous decision win.
