Two-time welterweight champion Shawn Porter has shared his thoughts on the controversial match-up between Gervonta Davis and Jake Paul.

It was announced last week that reigning WBA lightweight champion ‘Tank’ Davis will lock horns with Paul on Friday November 14 at the State Farm Arena in Atlanta, Georgia.

Davis was originally pencilled in to face fellow countryman Lamont Roach Jr in their much anticipated rematch next, but these plans have now been shelved after ‘Tank’ instead opted for the shock clash against ‘The Problem Child.’

Paul was also reportedly in negotiations to face two-time unified heavyweight champion Anthony Joshua before this bout fell through at the final hurdle, with some reports claiming it was due to a network issue that could not be solved.

A number of boxing figures have criticised the Davis vs. Paul fight, and now former welterweight world champion Porter has offered his take.

Speaking on The PorterWay Podcast, he gave an honest assessment of the upcoming clash, as he expressed his concerns at the significant weight discrepancy between the duo.

“The issue that I have is you have a legitimate 135lbs champion getting in the ring with a 190lbs guy, whatever it is that Jake Paul is at. So let’s really answer this thing, Tank maybe walks around at 150 maybe, we know he’s not walking around at 170, we could maybe say 160 but we know without a shadow of a doubt 150 right?

“In shape, 145, in shape, you know what I mean? So this is different from a Crawford coming up to 168 but we know his walk around weight is probably 170/180 … This thing right here is all the way different and that’s my thing with this one.”

Ahead of Paul’s most recent ring appearance against Julio Cesar Jr last month, the 28-year-old weighed in at 198.5lbs, whilst ‘Tank’ weighed in at just shy of 134lbs for his March clash with Lamont Roach Jr, leaving fans and analysts wondering whether Davis is taking it a step too far when he does battle with the YouTuber-turned-boxer later this year.
