Shawn Porter Sparred Jaron Ennis And Delivers Honest Verdict On His Power As He Moves Up In Weight

Shawn Porter has revealed all on the punching power of Jaron Ennis as the undefeated star prepares to debut in a new division.

Porter enjoyed an accomplished professional career of his own, which spanned for 13 years between 2008 and 2021.

‘Showtime’ became a two-time world welterweight champion during his tenure and would suffer just four defeats, but boasts victories over the likes of Danny Garcia, Paulie Malignaggi and Yordenis Ugas.

He would announce his retirement just a short while after he was beaten by Terence Crawford in November 2021, ending his career with 31 victories, 4 defeats and 1 draw.

One man who has since become a star at 147lbs in his own right is Ennis, who has sparred Porter in the past.

Speaking on The PorterWay Podcast, Porter praised the punching power of ‘Boots’ Ennis, revealing the former unified world welterweight champion ‘hit like a bullet’.

“I saw it in sparring. [Ennis] punched me with a right hand, the joint came so fast I didn’t even see it right and it hit me on the forehead, and I got my head gear on, and it jarred my neck right? I said ‘Damn’ and he moves away like I was hurt, I said ‘Nah I’m good but god damn’ like he stopped me and I wasn’t even coming at him you know what I mean?

“It’s like I always talk about guys having power and then somebody moving into the punch helping the power, I wasn’t moving in to it, I wasn’t slipping the wrong way and got caught, he just threw a right hand and that joint was like [a brick], and he punched me in my chest one time too, he caught me to the body once and that was the one I was like ‘Nah it ain’t happening today’, he caught me to the body once, but he hit me in my chest once and that joint was hurting and I felt it on the back end too like damn it was like a bullet. So the power is there.”

Ennis is set to make the move up to super-welterweight before the end of the year. It was confirmed he had vacated his IBF welterweight title earlier this month.

The 28-year-old from Philadelphia extended his unbeaten record to 34-0 with a dominant victory over Eimantas Stanionis in a unification bout earlier this year, but then said he was not performing at full capacity due to cutting too much weight.

Undefeated knockout artist Vergil Ortiz Jr waits at 154lbs for an all-action fight.
