The Terence Crawford vs. Canelo Alvarez fight is edging ever closer.
Two of the pound-for-pound best in boxing will collide when they meet in Las Vegas in September, with Crawford stepping up two weight divisions from super-welterweight to super-middleweight.
‘Bud’ has only had one fight at 154lbs, coming last August when he defeated Israil Madrimov to win the WBA super-welterweight title, and so it’s set to be a big jump up for the American.
The fight against Canelo could even be for undisputed honours, provided that WBC, WBA and WBO champion Canelo first defeats IBF champion William Scull in May.
Some of the biggest names in boxing have already weighed in with their predictions for the Crawford vs. Canelo bout, with legendary trainer Ronnie Shields now the latest to do so.
Shields has worked with greats such as Mike Tyson and Evander Holyfield, and he had a simple response when asked by Fighthype if Crawford can hurt Canelo at 168lbs.
“Absolutely.”
Shields then explained exactly why that is, referring back to Canelo’s defeat to Floyd Mayweather in 2013.
“Canelo wanted to press Floyd, he tried to. Floyd kept stepping around him. One or two simple moves and Canelo had to reset.
“Floyd never had to reset. Boom, boom boom. Step around. Trust me Crawford is going to look at that and perfect that and that’s why I give him a great shot.”
All will be revealed when Crawford and Canelo meet later this year, and Mexican legend Julio Cesar Chavez has also made his prediction.
