It’s been two years since former unified welterweight champion Errol Spence was last in the ring.
The American was viewed as one of the best pound-for-pound fighter after his rise to the top at 147lbs, claiming wins over fighters such as Shawn Porter, Danny Garcia, Mikey Garcia and Kell Brook.
It all led to an undisputed showdown with fellow pound-for-pound star Terence Crawford in July 2023, in a fight that everybody vewed as an extremely competitive affair, with most people even seeing Spence as the slight favourite.
It turned out to be anything but competitive though, as Crawford dominated proceedings from start to finish, dropping his rival multiple times on his way to a ninth round stoppage win, becoming undisputed welterweight champion and handing Spence the first loss of his professional career in the process.
Spence is yet to step back into the ring since that defeat, with an ongoing eye injury among the reasons why, but he has now been offered an immediate world title shot were here to make his return.
Sebastian Fundora is the current WBC super-welterweight champion, having most recently defended his belt with an impressive seventh round retirement win over Tim Tszyu last weekend.
Speaking in the post-fight press conference after his win over Tszyu, Fundora revealed that he would be happy to defend his belt against Spence, after the pair have already been linked to a fight with one another in the past.
“I hope so. I would still like to fight those guys…
Spence, I don’t know where he’s at but I’m sure he’s going to come back good and strong, and when he does I’m ready for him.”
Time will tell whether a fight between Spence and Fundora can indeed come to fruition.
