Although Terence Crawford has just made his debut at super-welterweight, he is looking to move up a further two divisions to challenge Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez.

The 37-year-old from Omaha, Nebraska became a four-weight world champion with his most recent win over Israil Madrimov. He has made it clear that Alvarez, also a titleholder in four divisions, is the only man he truly wants to face before retiring.

Some in the sport, despite Crawford’s unquestionable skillset, believe the extra 14 pounds will be a step too far. That doesn’t include Errol Spence Jr, though.

Speaking to Fight Hub TV, the man ‘Bud’ beat to become undisputed at welterweight last year gave his thoughts on the match-up.

“It could happen, I mean why not? If Crawford wants to challenge himself to be great then let him try to be great you know, so I’m with it.

I’ll be going for ‘Bud’ if he fights Canelo, I’ll be going for him. I don’t know if he’s going to win or lose but I’ll definitely be going for Crawford. I think if anybody can pull it off he can pull it off.

He’s chasing greatness so why not? Canelo went up to 175 and fought Kovalev and fought the other guy [Bivol] too, so if he can do it, and he started at 147, so if he doing then why can’t Crawford do it.”

Neither Canelo nor Crawford have fights booked in, so there is a chance fans may see it happen next. The Mexican was initially dismissive but may be coming round to the idea given he has largely cleared out the super-middleweight division and still isn’t keen on fighting David Benavidez.

As for Spence – who hasn’t fought since that stoppage loss to Crawford – he has been linked with his own debut at super-welterweight against world champion Sebastian Fundora.
