Errol Spence already has a good idea what Canelo Alvarez will have to deal with when he meets Terence Crawford later this year.

Canelo and Crawford are set to do battle in Las Vegas in September, with ‘Bud’ stepping up two weight divisions from super-welterweight for the clash at super-middleweight.

It could even be for undisputed honours at 168lbs, provided that WBC, WBA and WBO champion Canelo can first defeat IBF title-holder William Scull in May.

The bout against Canelo will arguably be the biggest fight of Crawford’s career, surpassing his undisputed welterweight showdown against Spence back in 2023.

That fight saw ‘Bud’ dominate proceedings, dropping Spence several times on his way to a ninth round stoppage victory, which meant Crawford became the sole ruler of a second weight class after his undisputed triumph at 140lbs.

With Crawford now getting the chance to potentially become a three-weight undisputed champion, Spence has told Fight Hub TV whether he feels his former foe has what it takes to defeat Canelo at 168lbs.

“I’ll be going for ‘Bud’, I’ll be going for him. I don’t know if he’s going to win or lose but I’ll definitely be going for Crawford. I think if anybody can pull it off he can pull it off.

He’s chasing greatness so why not. Canelo went up to 175 and fought Kovalev and fought the other guy [Bivol] too, so if he can do it, and he started at 147, so if he doing then why can’t ‘Bud’ do it.”

One talking point regarding the fight is whether ‘Bud’ will have the power to hurt Canelo at super-middleweight, and legendary trainer Ronnie Shields has shared his thoughts on that very matter.
