Former unified welterweight champion Errol Spence Jr appears to be on the verge of making his long-awaited comeback to the sport after over two years away from the ring.
The 35-year-old from Long Island, New York has not fought since he suffered the first defeat of his professional career to countryman Terence Crawford in July of 2023, surrendering his unified WBC, WBA and IBF welterweight titles in the process.
Spence had been expected to make his return to the ring during the earlier stages of this year, although a discussed clash with reigning WBC super-welterweight champion Sebastian Fundora fell at the final hurdle.
Whether or not those talks come to anything remains to be seen, however ‘The Truth’ is now back in the gym and and appears to be in good shape, recently posting a video of himself hitting the pads.
One commenter said, “Glad to see my boy back focusing on his craft. One loss doesn’t define your career, keep grinding!” Another praised Spence’s physique: “My Guy back in shape and very serious.”
Charlo has also been absent for two years, not competing since his loss to Canelo Alvarez in September of 2023. Though that fight was a jump up, he will likely return to the super-welterweight ranks, where he was previously undisputed, to welcome Spence up from welterweight.
