Errol Spence has remained inactive since his comprehensive defeat to Terence Crawford two years ago.
The 35-year-old from Long Island, New York has not fought since he fell short to ‘Bud’ Crawford in their monumental showdown back in July 2023, surrendering his WBC, WBA and IBF welterweight titles in the process.
Spence was reportedly in line to face unified WBC and WBO super-welterweight champion Sebastian Fundora earlier this year, but the fight failed to materialise for unknown reasons, leaving ‘The Truth’ waiting even longer for his return to the ring.
At 35-years-old, time could be running out for Spence to bounce back from the first defeat of his career and potentially become a two-weight world champion.
In an interview with Fight Hype, Frank Martin, who has been promoted by Spence since his fight with Gervonta Davis, shared an insight into the 35-year-old’s current situation and whether he is actually nearing a comeback to boxing.
Martin said that though the former unified champion is staying in the gym, he feels a return is not at the forefront of his plans.
“Man honestly, out of those convos like as far as with me and EJ, I don’t know, everybody’s different, everybody takes certain things different. You know, like EJ is in a stage right now, he’s investing a lot into his family, and he’s investing into like the future – he’s getting acres, he’s getting land, doing certain stuff like that. So I think like right now he ain’t really like, he’s training but I don’t think he’s too much worried about boxing.”
Should he make a return to boxing, Spence is expected to make the move up to super-welterweight. A bout against Fundora could still come to fruition at some point, despite the 27-year-old currently preparing for his rematch with Tim Tszyu.
