Shakur Stevenson has offered his take on the Gervonta Davis vs Lamont Roach Jr rematch.
Davis and Roach are likely to meet again this summer following their controversial first meeting at the Barclays Center in New York in March.
‘Tank’ was defending his WBA lightweight title in the fight, with many boxing fans expecting to see another highlight reel knockout from the undefeated sensation.
It didn’t work out that way though, as Roach put in a great performance to push Davis all the way, resulting in a contentious moment in round nine where ‘Tank’ took a knee but no knockdown was scored.
That proved to be crucial to the outcome of the fight, as the judges scored it 115-113 Davis and 114-114 twice, meaning a 10-8 round for Roach in the ninth would have swung the cards in his favour and seen him become the new WBA lightweight champion.
One man that has been linked with a fight against ‘Tank’ for a number of years is WBC lightweight champion Stevenson, who was last in action in February when he stopped Josh Padley to retain his title.
Stevenson has now spoken about the proposed Davis vs. Roach rematch, telling K.O. Artist Sports that he thinks Roach will be victorious but said ‘truthfully they are both good fighters”.
“I like Lamont in the rematch.
I sparred with Lamont and I knew that he was a good fighter. He helped me get ready for the Oscar Valdez fight, and I knew his style with Tank’s style what he was going to be able to bring to the table. They’re both good fighters, and it’s going to be a hell of a fight, truthfully they both good fighters. It was the same Tank we’ve seen throughout his entire career, he’s the same fighter and he’ll be the same throughout his career”.
The rematch between ‘Tank’ and Roach is yet to be officially announced, and Stevenson has claimed he would even be willing to face Roach next himself.
