Legendary trainer Emanuel Steward has revealed the one heavyweight great that he ranks even higher than Muhammad Ali and Lennox Lewis.
Steward played a pivotal role in the progression of British heavyweight legend Lewis, who became a three-time world heavyweight champion three time during his professional career, as well as capturing the undisputed heavyweight championship with that victory over Evander Holyfield in 1999.
As for Ali, the Kentucky-native is considered to be one of, if not the greatest fighter to have ever laced up a pair of gloves. He changed the landscape of the sport during his career, winning the world heavyweight champion three times along the way with victories over Joe Frazier, Sonny Liston and George Foreman.
Whilst Ali and Lewis proved themselves to be two of the greatest heavyweights of all time, boxing icon Steward once revealed in an interview with Rummy’s Corner that he believes there is one man in particular that was ‘even more amazing’ than both.
“George Foreman may be the most amazing, definitely heavyweight that I’ve ever saw in my lifetime.
He had a whole career as one fighter with a personality and a style, and then ten years after a rest period so to say, a different fighter, he had a different mindset and a different style to some degree but the one thing that was really prevalent in both was a strong will-minded person and his unbelievable determination and mental strength as well.”
Foreman’s storied yet accomplished boxing career began back in 1967 and would span until 1997, although the Olympic gold medallist would take a 10-year hiatus in-between.
He became a world heavyweight champion on two occasions during his tenure, but perhaps his most impressive victory came in 1994 when he defeated countryman Michael Moorer to capture the WBA and IBF titles to become the oldest heavyweight champion ever.
