Sturm Becomes Five Time World Champ

Felix Sturm,40-5-3-(18), became a world champion for the fifth time at the Koenig Pilsener Arena in Oberhausen, Nordrhein-Westfalen, Germany on Saturday night when he scored a 12 round majority decision win over Fedor Chudinov,14-1-(10), to claim the WBA super middleweight title.

The 37-year-old German built up a lead early on but Chudinov looked to be landing the bigger punches. To his credit, Sturm dug deep into his reserves to stand firm and keep to his game plan.

Sturm was cut over the right eye in the 10th round from an accidental clash of heads in what became a close and difficult fight to score in the latter rounds. After 12 tough rounds, though, two of the judge saw Sturm’s cleaner boxing as the decider by scoring the bout 115-113 for Sturm while the third official made the fight even at 114-114.

It now looks like Sturm could face WBO champ Arthur Abraham should he defeat Gilberto “Zurdo” Ramirez in Las Vegas on April 9.
