Floyd Mayweather and Roberto Duran were both stars of the welterweight division during separate eras.
Mayweather was a five-weight world champion from super-featherweight to light middleweight, but his most notable wins came at 147lbs, where he defeated the likes of Manny Pacquiao, Shane Mosley and Ricky Hatton.
Duran was a four-weight world champion, claiming world honours at lightweight, welterweight, light middleweight and middleweight, but it was during his time at 147lbs where he was involved in epic clashes against Sugar Ray Leonard.
Leonard and Duran along with Thomas Hearns and Marvin Hagler were known as ‘The Four Kings’ due to their incredible battles and rivalries in the 1980s, and Leonard has now offered his take on who would have won between Mayweather and Duran.
Speaking to Box Hub TV, Leonard felt that Mayweather would have lost to Duran, along with the rest of the ‘Four Kings.’
“Mayweather can compete with the four of us in our era, but a bit more fire would come his way. Could he beat me? No. Could he beat Tommy? I don’t think so. Could he beat Hagler? No. Could he beat Duran? No.
“With that being said and all due respect to Mayweather who was an incredible technician, if you ask him he would say the same thing that he could beat us and beat our guys in my era. Fighters say that and believe that. Fighters believe they can beat anyone, and if you don’t say you can beat anyone, you’re not a fighter.”
Mayweather retired with a perfect 50-0 record in 2017, but there has been recent speculation regarding whether he could follow in the footsteps of his old rival Pacquiao and make a shock return to the sport.
