Sugar Ray Leonard Didn’t Hesitate When Asked If Floyd Mayweather Beats Prime Marvin Hagler

Floyd Mayweather Jr and Marvelous Marvin Hagler are two of the very best fighters to have ever laced up the gloves.

Hagler’s career spanned between 1973 and 1987, where he reigned as the undisputed middleweight champion for seven years between 1980 and 1987. During his reign as middleweight champion, he defeated the likes of John Mugabi, Roberto Duran and Thomas Hearns amongst others.

Mayweather captured world titles across five weight classes throughout his outstanding professional career, defeating the likes of Oscar De La Hoya, Manny Pacquiao and Canelo Alvarez along the way. He called time on his career back in 2017, retiring with an unbeaten record of 50-0 to his name.

Hagler rose to prominence around the same time as the legendary Sugar Ray Leonard during the 80’s, with the iconic duo making up the ‘Four Kings’, alongside Duran and Hearns. Leonard famously defeated Hagler by split decision for the WBC middleweight title after returning to the ring from a three year retirement.

In an interview with Box Hub TV, Leonard gave an honest verdict on whether he believes Mayweather would have been able to compete during that incredible era and believes he would have lost to all of his rivals.

“Mayweather can compete with the four of us in our era, but a bit more fire would come his way. Could he beat me? No. Could he beat Tommy? I don’t think so. Could he beat Hagler? No. Could he beat Duran? No.”

Since walking away from the professional ranks, Mayweather has turned his attention to the exhibition side of the sport, facing the likes of Logan Paul, Tenshin Nasukawa and Aaron Chalmers since his retirement eight years ago.
