Sugar Ray Leonard has revealed who he believes are the three greatest fighters of all time.
The retired American icon had an outstanding professional career, where he won world titles across five weight divisions as well as the undisputed championship at welterweight and middleweight.
Leonard exploded onto the scene during the late 1970’s and would go on to become one of the ‘Four Kings’ alongside Thomas Hearns, Roberto Duran and Marvin Hagler.
He defeated each of the aforementioned fighters on at least one occasion during the 80’s, although his 1980 victory over Duran, known as the ‘No Mas Fight’, is perhaps his greatest ever and one of the sport’s most memorable moments.
As one of the all-time greats himself, Leonard is well-placed to pick his company. Speaking to Fight Hype, ‘Sugar Ray’ made no mistake in naming who he believes are the three best to have ever laced up the gloves.
“The best boxers? I would say Muhammad Ali, Sugar Ray Robinson and Rocky Marciano. But there is many, many more!”
Ali, Robinson and Marciano are unquestionably three of the sports most influential figures, leaving behind legacies that live on even in the present day.
Ali and Marciano were pioneers of the heavyweight division, with many fans and analysts debating over the years who would have prevailed in an intriguing fantasy showdown between the pair.
Robinson had a professional career that many could only dream of, certainly in the modern era. He fought on just over 200 occasions during his tenure, reigning as the world welterweight champion between 1946 and 1951, followed by the middleweight championship which he held on multiple occasions between the years of 1951 and 1960.
