Trainer and analyst Teddy Atlas has criticised the judges that were tasked with scoring the historic showdown between Terence Crawford and Canelo Alvarez.

‘Bud’ Crawford pulled off a monumental victory over the Mexican icon on Saturday night to capture the undisputed super-middleweight championship at a packed out Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas, Nevada.

The 37-year-old from Omaha was declared the winner via unanimous decision as the judges scored it 115-113, 115-113 and 116-112 all in his favour, putting on an impressive performance against Canelo in what was his first ever appearance at 168lbs.

Speaking on ESPN post-fight, Atlas said that the one aspect of the fight that ‘bothered him’ was how close the three judges scorecards were, believing they should have been a lot wider in favour of the ‘dominant’ Crawford.

“There’s only one thing that really did bother me and that’s why I don’t want a rematch… I’ve been in this business 50 years, too long to fool myself, those judges really gotta look in the mirror to have it that close. There’s no way it was that close. Thank God he [Crawford] dominated because otherwise we might be here talking a whole different thing.”

It remains to be seen whether Crawford will retire from the sport or not following this outstanding win, although the 37-year-old seems keen on fighting again. He has suggested that he could make the move down to middleweight next in a bid to become a six-weight world champion.

What’s next for Canelo remains to be seen. The 67-fight superstar also said that his campaign is not over, however if a rematch doesn’t happen then many fans will wonder what others fight makes sense.
