The lightweight division currently boasts four champions: WBC’s Shakur Stevenson, IBF’s Vasiliy Lomachenko, WBA’s Gervonta Davis and WBO’s Denys Berinchyk.
The 135 scene is as stacked as ever and seems on the verge of providing fans with unification fights between the men listed above.
So who would come out on top should the business side be taken care of? In a feature with Pro Box TV, famed trainer and analyst Teddy Atlas backed Gervonta ‘Tank’ Davis.
“Tank Davis. Tank Davis is the man. Right now he’s in his prime, he can do everything. Forget about the fact he’s the harder puncher and all of that, but he’s also a terrific counterpuncher, sets traps, can use his legs when he has to, he’s patient when he needs to be, deliberate, cerebral. Right now he’s the complete package.
He’s probably the only guy I can think of beating Shakur Stevenson right now. Shakur Stevenson is that difficult because of his style, his ability, his eyes, legs, hand speed, the way that he controls range. Tank Davis is the only guy I can see that can possibly decipher Shakur Stevenson. That’s how good he is. That’s why he’s the man.”
Davis is coming off an impressive stoppage victory over previously undefeated Frank Martin and is set now to enter talks with Lomachenko to stage a WBA and IBF unification.
Fans will have a keen eye on Stevenson’s fight against Artem Harutyunyan this weekend in Newark, as many believe ‘Tank’ will face a tougher test with him than the elite but ageing Ukrainian.
