Vasiliy Lomachenko and Gervonta Davis are set to enter talks for a lightweight unification fight.

The WBA Champion, ‘Tank’ Davis, retained his belt against the previously-undefeated Frank Martin this month, setting up the fight with Ukraine’s ‘Loma’, who won the vacant IBF belt against former unified champion George Kambosos Jr in May.

Pitting Lomachenko’s elite movement against Davis’ calculated power, the bout will be a cross-promotional affair between Top Rank and PBC.

Analysing the fight, trainer turned pundit Teddy Atlas talked up both men.

“Tank Davis is superb with power, but superb with everything else too. With the technique, with making you miss, with being able to press you, with being able to counterpunch, with his IQ. All the things that Lomachenko brings to the forefront, he has too. Man, I wish Lomachenko was a little younger.

I’m looking to see who breaks whose will. Yeah, I said it. For me, that’s what that fight specifically [comes down to.]”

Ultimately though, Atlas feels that Lomachenko is just too old to compete with the fresher ‘Tank’.

“Tank Davis was spectacular. Lomachenko, by the way, a little earlier, was speculator. Difference in age – Davis 29 Lomachenko 36 – yeah, I wish that we were talking about this four years ago … but you can’t turn the clock back.

It looks like they’re heading towards that fight and I make no qualms about it, I don’t mince my words, I think it’s a few years too late for Lomachenko. The fight would’ve been on my bucket list some years ago. I’m still gonna be interested, but not quite the same.”

The fight, should both parties agree around the negotiating table, could land in November.
