Shakur Stevenson is, by the numbers, one of the least hittable fighters in the sport today. 22 have tried and failed to beat him.
The three-weight world champion from Newark currently holds the WBC Lightweight World Title and has made one successful defence since winning it.
Though Stevenson has been criticised for fighting safe and in a less-than-entertaining manner, he has assured fans that facing the best will make him raise his game.
There’s little doubt that the best match-up in the division, and perhaps one of the best in the sport entire, is against Gervonta Davis. ‘Tank’ holds the WBA title and has a polar opposite fighting style having only heard the final bell twice in his undefeated campaign.
Speaking on Pro Box TV, famed trainer turned analyst Teddy Atlas says the big puncher from Baltimore is the only man who has the ability to ‘decipher’ the puzzle Stevenson presents.
“Tank Davis. Tank Davis is the man. Right now he’s in his prime, he can do everything. Forget about the fact he’s the harder puncher and all of that, but he’s also a terrific counter-puncher, sets traps, can use his legs when he has to, he’s patient when he needs to be, deliberate, cerebral. Right now he’s the complete package.
He’s probably the only guy I can think of beating Shakur Stevenson right now. Shakur Stevenson is that difficult because of his style, his ability, his eyes, legs, hand speed, the way that he controls range. Tank Davis is the only guy I can see that can possibly decipher Shakur Stevenson. That’s how good he is. That’s why he’s the man.”
Davis returns to the ring this December against Lamont Roach Jr. Shakur is currently sidelined with a hand injury but is aiming for a February 2025 fight against William Zepeda.
